Pastor David preaches a New Year’s sermon entitled How to acquire heavenly wisdom for 2024.” David defined wisdom as practical skills for successful living, described the two main sources of wisdom, one from above and another from below, and then delineated six pathways to acquire more wisdom according to Proverbs 3:1-12.
Proverbs 3:1–12 (ESV) 1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, 2 for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. 3 Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man. 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. 7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. 8 It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones. 9 Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the first fruits of all your produce; 10 then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. 11 My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, 12 for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.
- Submit to the teachings and commandments of God in mind and heart (1-2)
- Submit to the grace and faithfulness of God in relationship (3-4)
- Submit to the understandings and pathways of God (5-6)
- Submit to the perspectives of God (7-8)
- Submit to the honoring of God by giving of first fruits (9-10)
- Submit to the discipline of God through discipleship (11-12)
The rewards of practicing these heavenly principles of wisdom in general are as follows:
- Extension of life and peace (1-2)
- Favor with God and mankind (3-4)
- Straight pathways to the end goal (5-6)
- Healing of the physical soft and hard areas of the flesh(7-8)
- Fullness of hard and soft physical resources (9-10)
- Assurance of relationship with the loving Father (11-12)
In summary, heavenly wisdom begins by the fear of the Lord and following the discipline practices. If you want more wisdom for 2024, may I suggest an application of focusing on one of the above practices or disciplines. Another application could be to read through a chapter of Proverbs each day of the month, recording the one verse that spoke the most to you.
